| I want my paintings to show the unexpected tendency of things, how surprised we are when cerulean blue stutters over tangled roots, pools into long shadows. I go through the process of painting what I see in a blue pond, how stems continue downward into the world of algae and slime. I also want my paintings to show more than I see. When I add what I know about the subject through research, I stumble upon a new realization, that the slight ripple I feel is a muskrat nibbling a rust-orange rhizome. I envision the unexpected, deep in the murky water, where it all begins and ends, where almost no one ever looks. If I can do that, I'll present an image that comes closer to a truth. | ||||
