On the plains, much of the terrain is stretched and flat and seemingly holds nothing more than stones and bushes under an empty sky. The horizontal lines and sameness of features produce a calming effect that can put us to sleep as we drive mile after mile. But a closer look reveals a mystifying collection of surfaces and shapes, colors and materials. In this painting, the eye immediately interprets the horizontal direction as a serene landscape; yet, it also suggests possibilities for discovering treasures.
