The Cuna Indians inhabit the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama. The women of this isolated tribe craft appliqué designs called molas on their blouses. The background surrounding the stark yellow flowers in this painting is one of the Mola designs we study in my watercolor workshop. One of my students recently asked an old man on the island what he wanted most of all. After a long silence, he responded by pointing to the land, the sea, and the sky. "This is all I need," he said.
